 — John H. Cohen, age 94 was born on August 11, 1919 and passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2013, just 20 days after turning 94 years old. William was a resident of Sikeston, Missouri at the time of his death.


John Henry Cohen SIKESTON – John Henry Cohen, age 94, died Saturday, August 31, 2013 at the Missouri Veterans Home, Cape Girardeau. Born August 11, 1919 in Parkin, AR, son of the late James Henry Cohen. and Florence (Cooper) Cohen Sullivan, and Stepfather, Ulis Sullivan, he was a member of the Tanner Street Church Of God. He served with the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945 and was employed by the SEMO Electric Cooperative as a lineman and construction foreman, and was a member of the Sikeston planning and zoning commission, a member of the Missouri State Checkers Association, and was a Missouri State Checkers Champion. On September 3, 1943 he married Betty Ann Loften; she preceded him in death October 23, 2000 Survivors include two son’s and daughter-in-law, John Henry Cohen of Knob Noster, MO; Paul David and Carol Cohen of Sikeston; two daughters and son-in-law, Sharon Brown of Sikeston; Martha and Dave Closey of Medway, OH ; one brother, Benny Cohen of Sikeston ; two sisters, Bea Dalinis, Wilmington, IL and Betty Ann Hobson, Broadview, IL; Thirteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild also survive. In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and one grandson John Henry Cohen III. Friends may call Tuesday, September 3, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Ponder Funeral Home where services will be conducted September 4, at 10:00 a.m. The Rev. John Neeley, pastor of Tanner Street Church Of God, will officiate. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston. Full Military honors will be provided by the Missouri Funeral Honor Guard. John Cohen played many tournaments, which he won the 1987 Missouri 3-Move or 1987 Missouri 3-Move (desending order) , and here he is playing some his last tournaments 2006 IL 101 and 2007 Illinois State Open which his son Paul Cohen usually dove him to the Tournament match.
